What type of matcha should I use?

For this smoothie, go for a high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha. Ceremonial matcha is a bit pricier, but it’s worth it for its pure, rich flavour and vibrant colour, which makes all the difference in taste and appearance. If you’re looking to keep it budget-friendly, culinary-grade matcha will still work, though it might have a slightly more bitter taste. Look for a bright green powder – dull matcha can mean it’s less fresh or lower quality.

Why does matcha give a different type of energy boost than coffee?

Matcha contains both caffeine and an amino acid called L-theanine, which work together to give you calm, focused energy. Unlike coffee, which can sometimes lead to a quick spike and crash, matcha provides a more sustained energy boost, helping you stay alert without the jitters. This makes it perfect for those morning breakfast smoothies or as a pre-workout kick (especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine like I am).

How to create the smears on the glass:

Creating beautiful swirls on your glass for the Copycat Erewhon Matcha Smoothie is simple and adds an eye-catching touch! Here’s how to do it:

What You’ll Need:

  • Chilled coconut cream – this is an important step as it helps separate the liquid from the solids in the coconut cream can
  • Small spoon or squeeze bottle – to smear the coconut cream on
  • Chilled glass – chilling helps the swirls stay in place longer

Steps:

  1. Prep your coconut cream: Place coconut cream can into the refrigerator overnight to ensure you can separate the thick cream from the liquid. If it’s too runny, it may not hold the swirl shape.
  2. Create the Swirls:
    • Use a small spoon to smear inside of the glass in a swirling motion.
    • Start from the top of the glass and move downward in a circular motion to make a spiral effect.
  3. Chill the Glass (Optional): To keep the smears from dripping down too quickly, you can chill the glass in the freezer for a few minutes after adding the coconut cream. This sets the design and keeps it from melting into the smoothie.
  4. Pour in the Smoothie Carefully: Slowly pour the smoothie into the glass to preserve the smear effect. Pouring directly in the centre of the glass rather than along the sides helps keep the smears in place.

This technique is an easy way to elevate your smoothie presentation and make it Instagram-ready!

Why does my smoothie turn brown or lose its bright green colour?

Matcha is sensitive to light and heat, so if you let the smoothie sit out for too long, it may oxidize and lose that vibrant green hue. For the freshest color, blend and enjoy immediately, and if you’re taking it on the go, use an insulated bottle to keep it cool and protect it from light. Fresh, high-quality matcha also holds its colour longer, so if your smoothie’s turning brown quickly, it might be worth investing in a better matcha powder!

What other superfoods can I add?

You can take this smoothie to the next level with add-ins like chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp hearts, or a spoonful of spirulina for an extra green boost! Maca powder is another popular addition that complements matcha and adds a bit of a caramel, malty flavour along with adaptogenic benefits. Just remember, a little goes a long way with superfoods, so start small to avoid overpowering the matcha flavour!

This recipe brings Erewhon’s signature smoothie magic right to your kitchen, making it perfect for any conscious cook ready to glow from the inside out!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsweetened Almond Milk

  • 1 Small Frozen Banana

  • 1 tbsp Sea Moss

  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

  • 1 tsp Sugar-Free Maple Syrup

  • 2 tsp Ceremonial-Grade Matcha Powder

  • 3 Large Ice Cubes

  • 1-2 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder or Collagen Powder (of your choice)

  • 1-2 tbsp Chilled Coconut Cream (thick part)

Directions

  • Prepare your coconut cream the night before you plan on making this smoothie by placing the can into the refrigerator. This helps push the thicker part of the cream to the top, while leaving the liquid at the bottom.
  • Next, throw everything into a high-speed blender (except the coconut cream) and blend until smooth or like the consistency of a frappe.
  • Smear chilled coconut cream inside your glass to create a pretty effect. Next, gently pour the smoothie into the glass and enjoy!

Notes

  • Ensure you use a chilled can of coconut cream when smearing the glass with the cream to ensure it does not just slide down the glass.
